Held in the international women’s week, the Safaricom women first 5k turned out to be the most vibrant and high decibel moment of the year. With 10,000 women gathered to walk, run and enjoy the 5k run, the energy levels were incredible.
Women seemed excited to run on the streets of Addis without their male counterparts as the energy levels were way higher than that of the GER 10k held a couple of months ago.
Women at Safaricom Ethiopia also shared that feeling as they expressed their pleasure of being part of such a huge group of women runners. They also felt that the motto “Berchi/keep going” resonated all through the run as women spurred each other on to make it past the finish line. Kidist Mekonnen, Senior Accountant, said: “Berchi is not just for the race. It’s for life in general. We could sense Berchi in the run as people encouraged each other to persevere during the course of the run.”
Fitsum Gorfe is the winner among the women at Safaricom Ethiopia clocking in 32 minutes. She only needed to train for the five days before the race to become a winner among women at Safaricom Ethiopia. She remarked: “Sponsoring the event fits well with Safaricom Ethiopia as it has brought people from different parts of the world together to create something new and its role as a uniting force is reflected in uniting women through the race.”
Aster Wachira came in second at 34 minutes while Nuria Mohammed finished third coming in at 35 minutes.
There were also important “He for She” moments even before the race as the men at Safaricom Ethiopia joined in during the Zumba session on Friday. Men also came to the race to encourage their colleagues and take part in the race.
